Common questions about AI subscription plans
Does an AI subscription include API access?
No. ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and Gemini Advanced are subscriptions to the chat interface only. API access is a completely separate product billed per token. You can have both independently.
When is an AI subscription better than the API?
A subscription wins when you use AI heavily through the official interface and prefer a predictable flat monthly cost. The break-even point for ChatGPT Plus vs the API is roughly 130 million tokens per month, far above typical solo usage.
Is ChatGPT Team worth it for small teams?
ChatGPT Team at $25/seat/month is worth it for teams that live in the ChatGPT interface daily and need admin controls. For teams with any technical capability a shared API build is almost always cheaper.
